I finally waved the white eco-flag on my made-in-Michigan, push reel mower (cue rejoicing by my disapproving, better-lawns-and-gardens neighbor) and accepted a fine, used gas-powered gift from my father-in-law, John C Huhtala Sr (who was kind enough not to say I told you so). I wont give up entirely: The human-powered mower needs some replacement parts and a blade sharpening (which it wasnt supposed to), and will make a good backup. But really, even at its best, it couldnt cut the lawn well enough. Id go over the same spot several times and have to change the setting mid-mow. Its a crime to have to burn fossil fuels for this small city lot but I think it will have to be the main way for now. Maybe when were flush theres a good electric out there or a better reel mower. The ozone cries just a little...
