I find it upsetting once the artist becomes labled into the paradigms of good and evil based on contextual deviation or compliance, their contributions, creations, and expressions of their soul follow suit. What makes it even more tragic to me, is the polarization of goodcontributions, and the blatant revulsion of deviants or evil contributions. Humans seek to define perfection in the way we approach tasks, and the way we look at the world. But perfection to one, is ignorance to another. With this discrepancy, we are naturally imperfect. But I see one facet of existence that we can truly see a small glimpse of what perfection might be: the expression of ones soul through art. I believe that through art, we can see with clarity, the perfect expression of humanity, for all the beauty and wretchedness that makes us who we are. Wagner was horrendously anti-semitic, and a Nazi sympathizer. But does that mean we shut our ears to some of the most beautiful compositions of music that tell a story of a man swallowed by a tragic and poisonous adoration of nation and heritage? H.P Lovecraft was a man who was obsessed with the concept of being a gentleman and culture of antiquity. This turned him into a man of astounding, and shocking intolerance. Yet, despite this, his imagination gave form to the nameless alien horrors of our dreams, and continue to haunt us to this day. In his work, I see a man terrified of modernizing conventions and the world outside of his bubble. Why should the vices of the creator, eclipse and render invisible the expression of his or her soul? We cant strive for perfection, for we can never define it. We can, however, learn more about ourselves through the perfection of expression through creativity. We may not have to like the artist, for their disposition or archaic philosophies. But we can learn more of what makes us human by experiencing the beauty of art. [/rambling]
