I first got on Facebook about 5 1/2 years ago while trying to find a particular friend. I found him, by the way, living 165 miles north of me. I have found Facebook to be a great place to connect with friends, old and new. It is also a great place to share personal triumphs and sorrows, throw a little humor at each other, and to express viewpoints and ideals on any number of subjects from history to religion to politics to business. I have enjoyed hearing from like minded people as well as debating with those who do not always see things my way. I have only taken one person off my friend list and that had nothing to do politics or opinions. I simply got tired of that persons numerous self serving posts about how great his life was while berating others for spending too much time on Facebook. I guess you could say I just really didnt like him enough to keep him around. While attending our 50 year high school reunion in September, one particular classmate went out of her way to ask me if would accept her friend request if she re-friended me. It seems she de-friended me because of our differing political views and the spirited debates we have had. I said of course. The fact that we would never agree, did not mean we could not be friends. I noticed in the wake of the mid-term elections, she must have taken exception to my views (and possibly the outcome for her party), for she has once again de-friended me. I also noticed a lady of the same ilk from the class of 65 followed suit. I am pretty thick skinned and these things dont bother me that much. The reason I am writing this is to highlight the absurdity of killing a friendship over a difference in viewpoints. I appreciate and cherish the relationships I have honed here. That we may not always see eye-to-eye on every issue or subject should not an excuse to sever a 50+ year friendship. Tom Wms.
