Our EU country of the month, Romania, also brings into focus one of Europes most dynamic neighborhoods. Bordered by the ex-Yugoslav states to the West and former Soviet republics to the east, it lies in the heart of a region contested by the pull of the European promise and the remnants of a difficult past. The most recent case in point is its Romanian-speaking neighbor, the Republic of Moldova. Today, tens of thousands took to the streets in this state of 3.5 million in support of the governments decision to sign a landmark Association Agreement with the European Union at the EUs Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius (Nov. 28-29). This step, also taken by Ukraine and Georgia, is seen by an angry Kremlin as an encroachment in its sphere of influence and it has led to a commercial war in the form of Russian bans on R. of Moldovas main exports - wine -, matched by an EU response in the form of increased market access for the countrys producers.
