I first had the honour to work with Kodo on the ‘One World One Voice’ project back in 1990. They were a shock to my system in the way that they welded visual formality to a visceral, almost African percussive muscle that gave me goose bumps. Everything felt very precise & choreographed, yet their show evoked the unstable tensions of storms brewing & volcanoes about to erupt: in effect, nature as unexploded bomb. Filming them again in 2014 reaffirmed this exhilarating push & pull and Kodo’s enthusiasm to steer their piece, called ‘Open Doors’ composed especially for WWB, towards a more Western groove added a new dimension to the performance we captured.
