I found 10 Books Every Conservative Must Read in the bargain bin. It is a rather shallow book, but the books he recommends are worth reading. They are: Aristotles Politics Orthodoxy - G.K. Chesterton The New Science of Politics - Eric Voegelin The Abolition of Man - C.S. Lewis Reflections on the Revolution in France - Edmund Burke Democracy in America - Alexis de Tocqueville The Federalist Papers The Anti-Federalists The Servile State - Hilaire Belloc The Road to Serfdom - F.A. Hayek He also recommends: The Tempest - Shakespeare Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien The Jerusalem Bible But he calls Atlas Shrugged an imposter. What I find interesting is that The Road to Serfdom, a staunchly anti-communist treatise, includes this passage: Nor is there any reason why the state should not assist individuals in providing for those common hazards of life against which, because of their uncertainty, few individuals can make adequate provision. Where, as in the case of sickness and accident, neither the desire to avoid such calamities nor the effort to overcome their consequences are as a rule weakened by the provision of assistance - where, in short, we deal with genuinely insurable risks - the case for the states helping to organize a comprehensive system of social insurance is very strong . . . Whenever communal action can mitigate disasters which can neither attempt to guard himself nor make the provision against the consequences, such communal action should undoubtedly be taken.
