I found a recent email I received regarding Gut health, very informative so I thought I would share it. The author is Shaun Hadsall. Enjoy :). Did you know that there are 100 times more bacterial DNA (i.e. belly bugs) than human DNA inside your body? Did you also know that these bacterial "bugs" control digestion, metabolism, inflammation, and your risk of colon cancer and other cancers as well? They even produce vitamins and beneficial nutrients along with molecules that sustain your body and your ecosystem through a process called symbiosis (the living together of unlike organisms). New research has now emerged proving this directly affects your ability to lose weight and your overall health in a HUGE way. In fact, I was just reading through a remarkable study cited by "diabesity" expert, Dr. Mark Hyman, that found mice who had sterilized digestive tracts, or no "bad" bacteria in their guts, had 42 percent LESS body fat... Despite the fact they ate 29 percent MORE calories than the control group of mice! Even more remarkable, when normal bacteria were reintroduced into the guts of those same mice, there was a 57 percent increase in body fat AND insulin resistance --- without ANY increase in food consumption OR decrease in exercise. So much for the, "calories in vs. calories out" theory. In other words, gut bacteria "thrive" on what you feed them. If you feed them fresh, real foods from nature, "good" bugs will grow. If you feed them processed junk foods, then "bad" bugs will grow. And these bad bugs produce nasty toxins that have some very unpleasant side effects. In fact, millions of people suffer from an "unhealthy" balance of good bugs-to-bad bugs, which creates harmful interactions that can damage your gut lining, create a leaky gut, and instantly triggers high levels of inflammation. This can negatively impact your metabolism, affects how your brain controls appetite and, over time, creates insulin resistance AND fat gain. Here’s yet another example: A 2007 study in Diabetes Journal showed that the production of toxins in your gut (a process called "metabolic endotoxemia") can lead to obesity and insulin resistance. Rats that were fed a high fat, low fiber diet, released bacterial toxins called lipopolysaccharides (LPS) into the bloodstream THROUGH the gut. These toxins created an inflammatory response indirectly causing insulin resistance. So toxic bugs in your gut can make you inflamed AND fat. Another eye-opening study to say the least. And if you’ve ever eaten unhealthy in the past...or you’re currently overweight, there’s a VERY high chance that you could be suffering from "bad" bugs inside your gut. A great tip for reversing some of the previous damage you may have done is to make sure you’re getting a healthy dose of omega 3s fats on a daily basis. Some of the best sources are wild caught salmon, sardines, ground up flax seeds, and raw walnuts. But the real solution is putting "GOOD" bugs back into your gut because it will help reduce the inflammation instantly and get your body to start burning fat again. It’s really THAT simple. So the question remains. Do YOU have "bad" bugs STOPPING your fat-loss?
