I found these comments on a Backstage article and thought they were kind of hilarious (not saying I agree), especially because they were posted by someone (probably an actor) from New York: The Top Ten Tips of Acting in Hollywood. 1. Be young and extremely good looking. 2. Be related to someone in the biz. 3. Sleep with someone in the biz. 4. See 1,2 or 3. 5. Be talented (This used to mean something else. Now it means being able to walk and talk on camera). 6. Be British and do an American accent. This makes you a GENIUS. (If youre American and can do a flawless British accent, no one cares). 7. Be the Diversity du jour. Years ago it was Black. Then they added Asian, then Gay, then European for a month, then Indian, then Black again. It will be non-specific Hispanic from now on. 8.. Waste lots of time and money on education, acting classes, amateur theater, short films and webisodes until you start working, then never do them again. 9.. Join the Acting Union. (It died a few years ago, but people still think the old 90s film and TV incomes are coming back. Theyre not. Ever.) 10. Criticize famous actors and talk a lot about your craft, your process or the work. This means youre unemployed. Start teaching.
