I found this and wanted to share with my friends or younger dancers... From Teddy Bee JUST WHY IS IT CALLED BEACH MUSIC? I spoke with John Hook, author of the book SHAGGING IN THE CAROLINAS. He also wrote BEACH MUSIC GUIDE 1 & 2. The story goes something like this: ... Back in the mid 40s music was going through all kinds of changes. One change was that black artists and black groups were coming onto the general music scene and there was some resistance by white owned clubs and radio stations. They just wouldnt play it. The teens wanted to dance to it because it had such a danceable sound and driving beat but the black artists just werent being played. As it turned out, there was a handful of clubs along the Carolina coast who heard the teenagers plea, so they started adding the songs to their jukeboxes. If the teenagers wanted to dance to that particular sound, they had to drive out to the BEACH. As a result of the clubs locations, Motown, R&B and Soul Music became known as BEACH MUSIC because thats where they had to go to hear it. An entire culture and style of dance grew up around it and its still spankin the planks on the dance floors today. Its a very unique style of dance and its that uniqueness that makes it so very special. Our job as shaggers is not only to enjoy it ourselves, but to support it, nurture it, share it and keep it alive for generations to come.
