I found this deeply moving. Not because Im a particular fan of Led Zeppelin -- theyre an excellent band but it was just never much to my taste. What I love is the look on Robert Plants face. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be him, you know? How many times has that guy walked by a music store or a dude busking on the sidewalk and heard his own words sung back at him? How must it feel to know that 90% of the rock musicians on Earth -- famous and obscure -- have dreamed of being you? To see all those faces on that stage at the end -- and you can argue about their relative merits as individual musicians, but whatever -- and know that in part, theyre there because they wanted to do what you do? It makes me feel very happy for him as a person. I hope he and the other surviving members of that band feel that sense of accomplishment. They may have started their band to get chicks or whatever, but along the way they changed the shape of music, as profoundly in their way as Mozart or Beethoven ever did. Somewhere right now in the world, theres a teenage boy or girl hunched over their crappy first guitar, laboring over that opening riff to Stairway. And thats down to those dudes. Well done.
