I found this great article this morning that I wanted to share. A lot of expectant mothers dont realize how important it is to continue getting dental check ups while they are pregnant. Your dentist likley will not take x-rays until the baby is born, however, many dental problems can be detected by using minimally invasive diagnostics like cavity detection cameras. Due to the harmonal changes that an expectant mothers body is going through, it is also very important for their gums to be assessed. Here are some of the high points of the article: 1) Follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush twice and floss once each day. If morning sickness is affecting your brushing, ask your dentist to recommend a toothpaste with a taste that is more bland. If you vomit from morning sickness, rinse your mouth with water. Avoid brushing your teeth right away to prevent brushing away the enamel, which can soften when in contact with the acid from your stomach. 2) Eat right for healthy teeth and a healthy baby! Dairy products such as cheese and yogurt are good sources of calcium. If you have problems with nausea, try eating small amounts of healthy foods throughout the day. Avoid sugary snacks even if you do crave them. 3) A dental checkup and cleaning during the first trimester will allow your dentist to identify any problems that should be taken care of during the second trimester or early in the third trimester—the ideal time for dental work during pregnancy with regard to safety and comfort. For other precautions, see our article on Dental Care Safe During Pregnancy. 4)Continue taking care of your oral health after the baby is born, and ask your dentist about how to care for your newborns gums and teeth. nj/helpinghands/deltadental/index.ssf/2014/05/pregnant_schedule_a_dental_che.html
