I get up by 5 every morning, and I rush home every evening because our eight cats will clamor for their meals, and I want to please them. We went through four vets before finding one who not only cares for their physical needs but who cares for their emotional needs, too. We try to provide them with all that will allow them to live long, contented lives. Each one has individual time with both of us each day because our relationships with each matters enormously to us and to them. When people walk into our house, it is clear from the towers, the toys, and our altered voices as we greet our kitty family that cats live and are loved here. For all who say that small, family farms can sustainably and humanely allow us to eat meat, dairy, and eggs, I ask: Would we care for our cats so lovingly if we knew they would be shipped to slaughter in six weeks or six months? Would we bother to form a bond? Would the fact that they would be money makers change our attitudes? Wouldnt the cheapest vet be good enough? Wouldnt no vet care be even better? Can we even talk about relationships between those making a profit and those who are the product? Would we snuggle with an animal who we then load on a truck? Wouldnt we change the way we see who they are to allow us to do the dirty deeds over and over again? Would they remain individuals when all we want is parts of them? And, even if we rather illogically think that loving care would still be possible, how could we separate our feelings from our actions? Love is required for loving care, and how can one love while keeping a killing schedule?
