I got a chance to tour Facebook headquarters this week. I’ve never seen anything like it. The first picture is the main courtyard. It reminded me of Main Street in Disneyland. First of all it’s spotless. And I mean REALLY spotless. It’s also huge. There are tables and chairs everywhere. There’s also that giant video screen that you can see on the right. And as you walk or bike from one end to the other, you pass several fully stocked restaurants. You can get practically anything you want for any type of diet. And this is how detailed they are. When I went into one of the restaurants they were actually offering a choice of “regular” or “extra crispy” bacon. Can you believe it? There’s also a pizza place. A hamburger place. A salad place. And a barbecue pit. And about 95 percent of the food is free. The second picture is a conference room right next to the courtyard. This is where Mark Zuckerberg holds all his meetings. They call it the aquarium. He doesn’t have an office. Just a desk nearby. The third picture is a vending machine. But this vending machine is stocked with computer parts, keyboards, and batteries. They have them all over the campus. So lets say you need a new keyboard. All you do is swipe you’re employee card, push a couple of buttons, and there you go. And finally the fourth picture is a complete wood shop. Anyone can go in there and learn how to make stuff with wood. The idea is get people interested in learning things outside of computers. How awesome is that. And I’m just scratching the surface. There’s also a bike repair shop. A dry cleaners. A barber shop. A music room filled with different instruments. An arcade. A gym. A climbing wall. A soccer field. Valet parking. Even expectant mother parking. And in the bathrooms, which are spotless, they have a bin filled with new toothbrushes. Along with aftershave and other items. It’s like something you’d find at a country club. Plus there are little self-serve snack bars everywhere with fruit, candy, protein bars, and drinks. And again it’s all free. The woman I was with invited me there, because she likes what I’m doing on Facebook. She wanted to get my thoughts about what I post about and put me on their “Facebook Stories.” I thought that was pretty cool. She also wanted me to make sure that people reading this don’t think that everyone who works at Facebook is a “spoiled jerk.” She says her co-workers are some of the smartest and most humble people she’s ever been around and that they all care very deeply about what they are doing. And honestly, that’s the same vibe I got. In fact I only had one problem. I’m 56. And I asked her if I was going to be the oldest person there. She SWORE there are many other people at Facebook who are my age. Let just say I’m still looking for them! (I say this with a big smile on my face)
