I got several fascinating movies on DVD for Christmas this year, but Id say this film is the pick. The story of Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay should be a lot more famous than it currently is, because it played such a critical role in the Abolition of Slavery in Britain (and a long time before Abolition happened in the USA). Some of the performances in the film are outstanding, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw offering a very convincing and sympathetic portrayal of Dido herself, but most particularly, Tom Wilkinsons Lord Mansfield is a very poignant figure. Throughout the film, we see a man of real ethics who has gradually been worn down over long years into conformity, and therefore is visibly torn between love of his adopted daughter, and legal/political expediency, when facing the most difficult decision of his career as Lord Chief Justice; ruling on whether the deaths of a large number of slaves while at sea was illegal.
