I got to see Maya Angelou speak at UH in 1997 with my, then wife, Josephine Fogo. She was brilliant, eloquent, and poignant and it was my pleasure to he heard her speak. However, the story that I remember are the events that coincided her talk. As I walked from the parking lot toward the will-call window, where I had dropped Josi I thought about another Angelou fan, Kim Dailey, my ex-girlfriend. As the notion, “I bet Kim will be here.” ran through my mind I looked to the right side of the entry to see her walking toward the will call window where my pregnant wife stood. As the three of us converged, I said, “Kim...” she looked up, “...this is my wife, Josi.” After a truly awkward nearly 3 minutes of “um... hi...” we went into the theater to find our balcony seats. A few minutes later I saw the usher heading our way with Kim right behind. As I had not heard of her tour until a couple of weeks before the event I bought our tickets last minute, whereas Kim had to save her money and bought her ticket at or close enough to the same time that her seat was the one right next to ours. After the talk, Josi, Kim and I spent some time getting acquainted. I have not seen or heard from Kim since but I will never forget that night.
