I gotta get something off my chest... I dont normally scold people for not going to shows, and that is not my intention here. Last night, there was a really good show at the House of Rock. Id say it was one of the best bills of the year! But the turnout was not great. For the majority of the night, there were literally more MN people at the show than Eau Claire people! Think about that! There were more people willing to drive 90 minutes for some regional bands than there were people who could make it to the same show in their hometown! That both blows my mind and worries me for metal in our area. Additionally, Ive noticed another change in the past year. Everybuddys Bar used to have metal shows all the time. I know that the owner loves metal above all else, but lately you dont see the kind of metal shows they used to have. Thats nothing against the venue, but it says a lot about the attendance at those shows. Im not saying all this to bring you down. I want to find the root of the problem. I want to open up a dialogue about this! What is it that keeps people from going to these shows? What would you need to see to get you to go to shows? I started ECU at a time when attendance was pretty weak and I wanted something to help drive that excitement about shows again. Right now, we are at a point where I am far more worried about the attendance for every local metal show than I was when I started ECU! It seems like after having a pretty strong following, the EC metal scene is now weaker than it has ever been, and that scares me! Last night, one of the bands made a comment on stage about the poor attendance, and immediately followed it with Thats ok, at least you guys pay attention, and clap, and actually appreciate the bands. We dont get that anywhere else! I know there is still something special about the respect that our locals have for a band on stage, but I know that show could have had so much more energy if even a decent amount of people checked out the bands and made it a point to go to the show. So I guess Im asking for your help. What needs to change? What can we do better? Where do we go from here?
