I grew up in a tight nit.. German singing family.. We would all gather in grandmas basement, at the bar. on the shuffle board that was painted on the floor.. and sing... This is where i learned folk music. Folks.. singing.. drinking.. in German town..Schnitzelburg, KY.. I have heard stories about Birdie and checks from folks.. the singing clubs that were about the neighborhood. The St. Es picnic.. followed by several other church picnics.. Today I drove by St. Pauls church just because I was in the neighborhood. This is the church that my father and his brothers sang the folks mass. Pretty much the Joe Wise songbook. There was nothing better than seeing my Uncles and Father breaking out the guitars.. At the derby party.. we would sing for hours.. my father would forget the words and keys and uncle jimmy would remember and off we went.. the Wright family songbook. Grandma the soprano, Joe the bass.. Mary and Judy.. then uncle Bubba and uncle Jim Beck all the other family members.... Everyone was in the Choir!! . Grandma would drink her highball and sing yellow bird! I have seen amazing folk musicians.. I have been to amazing concerts.. but tonight I wish I was in Grandmas basement.. in Germantown.. over on Dixon... Were me and my cousins spent many a wonderful family day.. playin in Grandma Kaelins Chicken house. Eating Braunschweiger and crackers.. or goin out to Social Male Chorus. I can Polka with the best... My Grandmother taught me.... and hanging around the cigar smellin club.... just being a Wright... doing what came naturally.. singing.
