I guess after hearing about Robin Williams death yesterday, my friend decided the latest fad to follow would be to claim a mental illness. We were at the tailors trying to choose styles for a friends wedding and she had changed her mind more than 30 times. The tailor was getting irritated with her. She would pick a style then change her mind just as we were about to leave. I got tired. Me: Come, this woman, choose style make we dey go na. Na here we wan sleep? My Friend: Im trying to choose. You know Im bipolar. Me: Eh?! Bi kini? Do you even know what that means? My friend: Yes na. Im bipolar that why I find it hard to make up my mind. Me: Youre not bipolar. Youre just confused. Pls, choose a style lets go. My friend: Youre making fun of me. Im bipolar jor. Me: Being bipolar is not a joke. Stop it. If youre bipolar, you need to be on medication. You think its like common cold or what? Its serious. You need a psychiatrist to put you on meds. My friend: No na. I dont need meds. Its not that type of bipolar. Me: If youre bipolar, youre most likely schizophrenic too. My friend: Haba! Why are you insulting me na? Me: Insult you how? Only you call yourself bipolar. Mental illness is not a joke. Its not something to play with. Bipolar disorder is a very serious ailment. I read a lot of updates yesterday of people that had or have mental illness. If you truly have an mental illness, you need help. Its nothing to be ashamed off but you cant just go round claiming an illness that you dont suffer from just to flow with the narrative on Facebook. That is disturbing. A friend put up a status update threatening to kill himself. The comments were......lets not even go there but I was disturbed. I dont know how many licensed psychiatrists you have on your friend list but if you have none, then nobody on Facebook can help you. You need proper medical help not Facebook likes or comments. Its just sad that Nigeria is one kain country. If you say you have a mental illness now, they would term you a lunatic. *smh*
