I had a brilliant idea, currently £16.94bn of benefits paid out are actually housing benefits paid to private landlords and housing associations. Why dont we have a MASSIVE council house building programme? This would have so many advantages and solve so many problems, for example: The Housing Crisis: if we build loads of affordable housing suddenly people have places to live. The Deficit: As I said earlier the second largest chunk of benefit payments (the largest chunk is pensions) is housing benefit which is being sucked OUT of the public purse and INTO the pockets of private landlords and housing associations. If we build very low rent council housing firstly this amount spent will drop and secondly the money we go back into the public purse not into the pockets of the wealthy. Unemployment: a massive housebuilding programme would generate lots and lots of blue-collar jobs a particular sector that suffers with high levels of unemployment. It would also enable us to create jobs for young people by creating apprenticeships for things like brick laying. The Economy: freeing up larger chunks of budget from people on a very low income by reducing rents Will stimulate the economy because as many economists say the further down the money food chain you are the more you HAVE to spend your disposable income. Also all the people employed in the creation of all these council houses will have more money to spend again stimulating the economy. Whats more we absolutely know that this will work because thats what renewed our devastated economy after the Second World War. It just seems so simple to me, I cant understand why politicians dont just enact this? Oh... wait.... yes I do - over 200 MP have property portfolios and over a quarter of Tory MP are landlords. UKIP have appointed Andrew Charalambous their housing spokesman - a man who has pocketed £745,351 in housing benefit from occupants. DEMAND BETTER FROM YOUR MPS!!! Write to them! Join a party and demand a council housing build program!
