I had a dream. Todays autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan would become tomorrows independent Kurdistan. Besides Duhok, Erbil and Sulaimaniyah, it would include Kirkuk, Khanaqin and the Nineveh Plain. In the future, its capital --as promised-- would relocate to Kirkuk instead of Erbil. It would be a secular, democratic, republic. No one would give a damn about being Sunni, Shia, Christian, Yazidi, Atheist, or whatever. Kurdistan would no longer be a country for Kurds only. Kurds might make up 60-70% (at best) of the total population. Other communities would include Assyrian, Chaldean and Armenian Christians, but also large numbers of Turkoman and even Arabs. It would definitely be among the Middle Easts most ethnically and religiously diverse countries. Kurdistan wouldnt be a poor country. In fact, it could easily turn into one of the worlds richest countries in less than five years, with massive oil and gas exports feeding the planet, plus its very important tourism and agricultural sectors. Well have excellent ties with the entire world, including Israel-- one of our future allies in the region. We will still be good neighbours with Iraq (or whatever will remain of it), and their people will always be welcome to visit. But its time we take our separate paths. Goodbye Iraq, youll always have a special place in our hearts, no matter how much we suffered from you. May peace, one day, find you, too.
