I had a number of requests lately about the procedure for getting your first learner permit as it has changed considerably in the past few years. The first thing you have to do is get yourself a copy of The Official RSA Driver Theory Test or a DVD of the same plus a copy of The Rules Of The Road, the latter is a book every driver should be in possesion of whether a learner or fully qualified! When you feel you are ready for the theory test then go to the RSA website at rsa.ie and follow the links to book your test. The test centre for this area is in Letterkenny at the bottom of the Main St on the corner opposite the old Dunnes Stores. When you have taken and passed your theory test you then need to have an eyesight test before applying for your first learner permit, unfortunately this will require you to go back to Letterkenny again to the opposite end of the town at the bottom of the Port Road opposite Sister Saras i believe it is better signed now than it used to be! Make sure you have all the required documentation otherwise they will not be able to deal with your application, your pps number needs to be on a letter with your name and address as they will not accept the number on its own. The reason you have to go in person the first time is for them to take your picture and signature and so reduce the risk of fraud, once you have done this any other communication with them can be done by post or phone. Having done all of that you then wait for your permit to arrive in the post and when you take receipt of it you can then book a driving lesson. To find an instructor you can also check the RSA website as they have a list of qualified instructors in your area or you can contact me! The EDT (Essential Driver Training) course is compulsory for anyone who takes out their FIRST learner permit after 4/4/2011 and consists of a minimum of 12 specific lessons, if you had a licence before that date then you do not need to do the course. If you are doing it then be aware you will not be able to take a driving test until after you have had your permit for 6 months and have completed all 12 lessons. I hope this helps with any questions you may have had if there is anything else you want to know then feel free to contact me by PM and i will do my best to answer your queries. Good luck!
