I had a phone call tonight from a musician from my past, and it - TopicsExpress

I had a phone call tonight from a musician from my past, and it ignited so many memories that Im feeling a little overwhelmed at how much Ive forgotten in my history as a performer. One thing about being older is that ones past can be brought to life in an instant. At 74, Im an elderly citizen. I dont feel that way, but Im reminded of it every day in a number of ways. So, OK, Im an elderly citizen. If I look back, I can acknowledge my mistakes and failures. I choose not to dwell on those, because they cant be erased, but instead on all the positive aspects of my life, and especially those brought to mind by my musician friend tonight, because they can still be enjoyed. I remember a few years ago when trumpet player Bobby Shue came to do a clinic at ISU. His recurring theme to the kids was, You are so lucky to be playing music. Maybe the kids needed to hear that, but Ive always known how lucky I am. I dont mean to say that it is all luck. I worked and studied hard at ISU for my Masters degree in music. That wasnt luck. But what Bobby meant was that the kids are all lucky to be involved in a stage performance, trained on their instruments, and learning a whole lot about performing. Just lucky to be playing under the auspices of the ISU Music Departmentl
