Watching Saturday Night Live 1. If you dont get Louis CK, that fine. More for me. 2. Black Jeopardy! was awesome. See what youve been missing out on with that lack of diversity, you guys? 3. The Mr. Big Stuff sketch would have been right at home in the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler-Ana Gasteyer-Maya Rudolph years. That should tell you something. And Vanessa Bayer and Nasim Pedrad werent even in it. The men on SNL are good -- Taran Killam keeps the bar high, Kenan Thompson is the comedy equivalent of utility infielder in baseball -- but, for me, this cast belongs to the women. 4. Sam Smith looks like early-90s Boy George, tries to sing like Sam Cooke, and makes pretty songs. That said, Im kinda done with mainstream cultures return to, for lack of a better term, holding up white artists performing black music like saviors after the Top 40 diversity of the 90s and 00s. Justin Timberlake, Adele, Macklemore, Lorde, Robin Thicke, and now Smith. I like a lot of these performers AND Im tired of seeing these artists surrounded by black bands, backup singers, or a black artist who gets to sing the hook or rap midway through the song (and, on some stations, gets edited out). Doesnt take away from the fact that these artists are really good. Talking more about industry/cultural forces in the current entertainment biz. For example, Ciara had a bangin album out last year -- did you know? 5. Dyke & Fats was a great one-joke sketch of the 2014-era conscious liberal set in a 1980s-style cop show. More, please. 6. I mentioned two awesome sketches with Sasheer Zamata. Are they taking the bubble wrap off her? Im happy with her so far. I gotta see what sketches the two black female writers now on staff have written, too.
