I had a session recently in which a little boy walked VERY reluctantly into my office; head down, sullen look on his face, no eye contact. I began by simply acknowledging what he was trying to tell his mom and me with body language--It looks like you arent very happy to be here, and maybe are pretty mad at your mom for making you come. He nodded--a little intrigued as I continued validating some of his upsets about his parents and siblings and school. By the end of the session, we were fast friends. We had kicked mom out of the room and had ourselves a great talk--full on eye contact and many smiles--and he left with an eagerness to come back. It never ceases to amaze me how ready kids are to open up to us when we let them know we sincerely want to understand their challenges without diving in with unwanted advice or judgment.
