I had a stunning revelation yesterday while discussing evolution - TopicsExpress

I had a stunning revelation yesterday while discussing evolution versus creation with an evolutionist. After I had replied to a comment (in which he accused my post of satire) God reminded me of our commission. I have heard this many times: dont try to win the argument, try to win the soul. It never made sense to me because I know that I dont save souls - only Christ has that power. Since I dont have the power to save souls, I concluded that I cannot win souls. The revelation, though simple, resounded the power of the Gospel. We are not commissioned to win arguments; instead, we are commissioned to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. While I do enjoy the challenge of the creation versus evolution debate, we must take the opportunity to steer the conversation to the real crux of the matter. I was reminded that the winning of souls to Christ *is* indeed at the crux of the matter by the evolutionist himself. Of course, I was accused of not keeping to the subject of the discussion to which I had initially answered. But then he followed up by saying, You DO realize that that very demand is the crux of the problem, right? By submitting this statement he admits that, at the core of the evolution versus creation debate, there is the need for reconciliation of whether or not there is an afterlife. [Sidebar - his reference to that very demand is the assumption that I demanded something when, in fact, I simply proposed two scenarios.] I urge everyone to engage in debate. It is a challenge because you must do some research to have arguments with solid foundation - both within Biblical doctrine and good science (or engineering). But within that debate, remember our commission. By all means, seek His wisdom when engaging in such debate. Let the Lord speak through you and the debate will cease to exist and become a moment to evangelize instead of criticize. I am still engaged with this evolutionist/unbeliever. By Gods grace, He has revealed resources and provided understanding in a compressed time frame. While I intelligently discuss the flaws of evolution (as in the scientific methods used by Darwin), I am led to reveal that the real problem is reconciliation of the existence of an afterlife. In this we are given two scenarios: a) there is no afterlife (in which God is wrong), and b) there is an afterlife (in which God is right). Provide the unbeliever the supposition that if God is wrong - i.e., non-existent, all roads lead to a heaven, there is no afterlife, no Heaven or Hell, etc. - then we can follow up with nothing gained, nothing lost. But then we must also give supposition that God is right (which by the Christians confession is undeniable) and, by association, Heaven and Hell do exist and our decision to either receive or deny Christ has consequences which must be reconciled. We (the Christian) cannot reconcile this for the unbeliever and I believe this is where we can often get trapped. If I try to reconcile for the unbeliever, then I will turn the discussion into an argument. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. The same is true when leading the unbeliever to the question: What if God is right? While you cant explain to the horse, if you dont drink youll die, you can provide the unbeliever with the idea that if one doesnt drink of the Living Water, one will die. While you cannot make the unbeliever drink, you can reveal the consequences of a dry spirit.
