I had a teacher message me thinking I was mad at teachers because of the school calendar for next year. Thats definitely not the case. I know the teachers were only given 2 choices and I even took the narrow survey they posted. Teachers had about as much choice in when school started as I do what day of the week Christmas falls on every year. I appreciate everything all the teachers do and sacrifice for our kids. I am sure that many teachers love the long breaks. I have been labeled everything from a whiner to a complainer etc plus Ive seen a few comments on other pages that it must be elementary parents complaining because they are the worst etc. Heres my deal. Im 46. Ive lived thru school from Labor Day thru Memorial Day. It can be done. Ive lived thru the years where the legislation was passed to limit school starting no earlier than 10 days before Labor Day... It can be done. Im not a parent who doesnt want my kid around. I have 2-3 summers left at home with one kid and 3-4 with the other. Im also not a parent that has vacation time to burn. Im an employer who has employees who have to schedule vacation time over the now 9 weeks of summer. Im a parent who wants to be with my children and wants them to go on summer mission trips (like the ones they had to cancel last year because of the school schedule). Im a parent who wants to go to the lake or beach for long weekends. Im also the parent that cant take off a week at Thanksgiving or Christmas or New Years to be with my kids. Im also the parent that wont take my dyslexic daughter out of school to go on a vacation because she has a hard time catching up and maintaining her A-B average. I am also the parent who wont take my other child out of her AP classes because its hard enough if we miss this new age even/odd day class anyhow. Im the parent who took my kid to school the day her grandfather passed away. So Im not a bad parent who doesnt want to be around my kid. Im not a parent who doesnt support the schools. My business and my family donates thousands of dollars to schools each year. We want the schools to be successful. I complain because Im a dad who loves his kids and I want to be around them. Ive seen the school system cram 180 days into a shorter schedule. I know it can be done. Its water under the bridge at this point. I will try to make lemonade from lemons. I havent walked a mile in the decision makers shoes and they havent walked a mile in mine.
