I had an absolutely fantastic evening. Tonights show was everything you could possibly want from a live show from Neil Gaiman. I was just expecting a live reading of a single story, but instead we got an evening of entertainment clocking in at 3 hours! There was live music from a 4-string quartet, then Neil Gaiman appeared onstage with a vast ledger from which he hand picked a selection of delightful original short stories I havent heard anywhere else before. And, in a surreal turn, he even sang a few songs, with a decent singing voice! The highlight, though, was The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains, a near feature-length story read by Gaiman, with musical accompaniment from the band and images by FROM HELL artist Eddie Campbell projected onto the screen. Haunting, creepy, and rich with atmosphere, it was an utterly immersive experience, just listening to Gaimans voice and he music and seeing the pictures. I was totally drawn in. Great storytelling, and a unique performance. If that had been my whole night, that would have been amazing. But THEN I got to go backstage! I met Neil Gaiman, briefly blabbered at him, then gave him copies of AND THEN EMILY WAS GONE 1-3 and posed for a photo op. Then he introduces me to Grant Morrison, who was also in attendance! And Im standing there with my two writing heroes as they listen enraptured as my friends mum chatting away....so surreal and incredible. Thank you so much to Janey Godley and Ashley Storrie for the wonderful night. I had an absolutely incredible evening, a capper to an amazing weekend.
