I had an interesting thought today - brought about by an event that happened to a friend of mine who lives out-of-state. My friend was home alone yesterday when his doorbell rang. He didnt answer it, thinking it was a door-to-door salesman, and simply watched through the window. After knocking and getting no answer, the guy went around back and kicked in my friends back door. While his door was being kicked in, my buddy got his gun and met the guy coming through the broken door. When the perp saw that he was staring down the barrel of a pistol, he bolted out the door and over the fence while my friend stood there shaking - without firing a shot. My liberal friend said, to media and police, that he was scared out of his wits and was happy that the situation was resolved without the need for him to take a life. Sounds like a good ending, huh? Or does it? Heres my reasoning on the situation... If some criminal came to my property and kicked in my door, how am I to know what his ultimate intentions are going to be? How do I know that hes just there to steal a few things and go away? My friend has a very pretty wife. How does he know that the guy wasnt there to wait for her to return home and then rape or (even worse) murder her? I dont care if the man looked like a wholesome young kid. Letting the guy get away doesnt mean that youre home free and it wont happen again. It just means that a criminal is out there with the ability to do harm to you, or someone else, again. Now, my buddy will be watching over his back for a long time to come, wondering if the guy will come back again... or if he told his friends that the guy who lives in this house has a gun but is too scared to use it. Not at this house. If anyone ever comes on this property with the intent to do me or my loved ones any harm, theyd better be willing to sacrifice their life for the attempt. The outcome would have been very different if this had happened to me. Once my door is broken open, the intent to do ill will to me, my family or my property is crystal clear. The guy wouldnt have had the time to even think Uh-Oh! before I would have ended the threat permanently. I will not give him a chance to surrender. That just lets him try again at a later date. Ditto with running him off (even more uncertain). I wont let him get close to me so that he could disarm me. I wont even give him the time to raise his hands. I dont know if he has a weapon secreted away where he can get it at an opportune moment. I will permanently resolve the situation in a manner that is satisfactory to me - end of story. If that makes me seem a psycho or hard case, so be it. I can live with that - because Ill be living and I wont worry about what might happen once the lights go out at night. Im sorry for your event, my friend. But you are a victim. Youre the kind of guy that criminals love to target because they know that they stand a good chance of getting what they want without consequences. Youre a victim because you will now stay awake at night and will jump at each and every unknown sound. Although the guy did you no immediate harm, the psychological consequences to you will be long term. Im sincerely sorry for that. But it didnt have to be that way. That wont happen to me. I promise you that. If I have a gun pointed at someone whos trying to do me wrong, it wont be with the intent to just scare them. I wish the world was a more flowers and sunshine place, but its not like it used to be...
