I had an interesting time today researching film music in the USC campus area. Since I was early today (just before 9 am) I decided to go to Doheny Library when it opened at nine. yelp/biz/doheny-memorial-library-los-angeles I immediately went downstairs and to the right to the Cinema & Television Library where I met Ned Comstock. I havent seen him in many years, and hes obviously still working there with no plans to retire yet (unlike me who retired six months ago!). We talked for 15-20 minutes. They do not have a Finding Aid like UCLA regarding special score materials they have, so I would have to contact via email for inquiries and having boxes pulled for me to read in the special reading room where Ned is stationed (4 tables there). He gave me the e-mail. I believe it is: [email protected] I may be interested in pulling Rozsa conductor scores they have from around 1952 to mid-Sixties. Ill see what they have, especially if its not duplicated at the Rozsa collection at Syracuse University: library.syr.edu/digital/guides/r/rozsa_m.htm#d2e210 Then I walked half a mile or so east (past the 110 freeway)to the annex off campus where the Warner Bros. Archives is located (ground floor). Yesterday I was the only one there researching; today two others showed up. I was there from 10 am to 4 pm. I spent the first three hours hand-copying choice Reel 2 cues from JIM THORPE--ALL AMERICAN. Then from1 pm on I worked on a few cue sheet boxes (and other music materials). One box I researched was #1139A, Years 1061-1963 that I started at 3:05 pm. It contained cue sheets (etc) on THE MASK, a Taylor-Roffmann Production, distributed by of course Warner Bros. The cue sheets were dated November 9, 1961. The composer was Louis Applebaum. In that box was are the cue sheets for HOUSE OF WOMEN, dated November 27, 1961, and a revised set December 6, 1961. prisonmovies.net/house-of-women-1961-usa Howard Jackson did most of the score but mixed in where cues by Max Steiner from CAGED. For instance, the opening music in reel one is titled Opening by Howard Jackson. Next is the Caged cue/music by Steiner for 45 seconds. Other Steiner cues are Dust at 53 seconds in Reel 1 as well; June and Mrs. Benton in Reel 2, Library by Ray Heindorf (used also in THE MUSIC MAN), and Pond by Heindorf, etc. Regarding MUSIC MAN, the documents were in this same box mentioned earlier. There is a composers agreement dated November 1, 1960 where it states Ray Heindorf would be paid $25,000 for music supervised & conducted by him (and also some short transition cues). But his services were not really used until Jan 9, 1961. So in MUSIC MAN: REEL ONE 1) Drums (Ray Heindorf) :25 2) 76 Trombones (Meredith Willson) 1:02 3) Being in Love (M.W.) :34 4) Wells Fargo (M.W.) :15 5) Till There Was You (M.W.) :13 6) Pick A Little (M/W.) :15 7) Rock Island (M.W.) 2:25 8) 76 Trombones (M.W.) :15 9) Iowa Stubborn (M.W.) 1:367 REEL TWO 10) Traveling (George Botsford) :05 11) Iowa Stubborn (M.W.) :09 12) Traveling etc REEL THREE 18) Introduction (Ray Heindorf) :16 19) Ya Got Trouble (M.W.) 4:13 etc. GYPSY cue sheets (dated Nov 2, 1962) were there but Im not too interested in that movie. Mostly Stephen Sondheim music, also Jule Stein, some Frank Perkins. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE cue sheets are in that box, dated even as late as 1-20-66, and also April 14, 1970. REEL ONE 1) Old Folks At Home (Foster) arr. Frank DeVol 1:08.6 2) Ive Written A Letter To Dad (Moe Jaffee, Henry Tobias) 1:34.2 3) Exit Music (Frank DeVol) 1:04.3 4) Jugglers Music :54.4 5) In Bed :34.1 6) Thats Our Problem :52.6 7) Main Title 2:02 8) Mrs. Bates (Sid Cutner) :2.9 9) TV (Frank DeVol) :56.9 ETC. 38) More Nastiness (Michael Anderson) :27.5 39) All About Lunatics 1:58.7 40) Elvira Speaks (Frank DeVol) :37.5 and so on..... CHAPMAN REPORT cue sheets are there (music by Leonard Rosenman) DAYS OF WINE & ROSES are there (dated Oct 9, 1960, and Nov 2, 1960). Production by Martin Manulis-Jalem Productions, distributed by W/B. Henry Mancini did the music. MERRILLS MARAUDERS cue sheets (dated Jan 26, 1962) are there. Howard Jackson did a lot of the music but they also edited in music by Franz Waxman (from OBJECTIVE BURMA) and Max Steiner. For instance, at the end of Reel 1 the music editor inserted the Landing cue by Franz Waxman (2:42 duration). Then the next cue in Reel 2 is Stop Firing by Waxman. The start of Reel 3s music is by Steiner (Chase), then next is Getting Ready by Waxman. Etc. Next is BLACK GOLD (dated 1962): https://youtube/watch?v=j0FPvUQWcJA Music is by Howard Jackson again but also edited-in music from Max Steiner. For example, in Reels 3 & 4: 15) The Bus (Max Steiner) :25 16) The Verdict :24 17) Saloon Fight 1:11 18) Silver River 1:47 .... 21) Ellen (Max Steiner) 1:57 etc.
