I had informal conversations with students around the campus and it is so disheartening to note that some students are paying little interest in the present UPNG SRC Elections. Some are saying outright that they are not interested in voting, even though the minimal requirements for voting merely involve standing in line for roughly 5 minutes and presenting your student ID Card for confirmation of eligibility to vote. What kind of political culture are we cultivating if we are not actively making the effort to participate in the politics in the university that we say we attend? People go out and vote. Exercise your democratic rights and be civic-minded for once!! The utter disinterest in civic affairs is crippling this nation (hence, our weak civil society movements and political leaders who view public opinion with disdain). At least students are expected earlier on to take an active interest in the processes that make their voices heard and their intentions known in the public realm of politics.
