I had my roof replaced earlier this year due to hail damage that I had sustained last year. The insurance company had already sent the check and I just needed someone to do the job for that amount. I had contacted a couple of companies and they came out and said they’d be getting back to me but never did.I even had an old high school classmate who did roofing but his quote was a little beyond the check. Well, I was watching TV about 3 am and saw a commercial for roofing. It had “American” in the name of the company. I gave them a call the next day and spoke with a guy with a Boston accent. He came out and wrote me up a contract and agreed to do the job. I selected my shingle color and he said his crew would be back next week, probably Wednesday. Wednesday…no crew. I called him and he said they were still tied up and would be there in a day or two. Friday morning a truck comes with a forklift and drops the shingles off. An hour later a 6 man crew shows up and begins to remove the existing shingles. I go out and meet the crew who happens to be all Mexicans and none of them speak English. ( I thought it comical that the name of the company is “ American” yet no one speaks English) I introduce myself in Spanish and let them get on with their work. Around lunchtime one of them goes and brings back lunch so I go out and ask if they’d like any cervesas? (Beer) 5 of them say “Si” so I bring the beers out and partake in one with the crew. They’re working pretty fast and the next day we’re drinking cervesas and getting the job done.Nice guys. I’m watering my garden and one of the guys comes over and looks at my garden. He points and says “Tomatoes”…I say “Si” He says “Onions”..I say “Si”…he’s now looking at my watermelon plants but doesn’t say anything.I know that water is “Aqua”...so I say “Aqua”….. and he says “Watermelon”…I laugh and say “Si”. I don’t know if the President’s recent immigration move would have had any impact on my crew or not. All I know is that I met some decent guys. Met one of their 8th grade kids who spoke perfect English.Drank some beers with them. And I now have a good looking brand new roof that doesn’t leak for the money that I had, and I also have their phone number for any additional repairs that I might need. Some brown guys with firm handshakes, and winning smiles, who laughed at my Spanish. We didn’t understand each other completely but we understood each other enough to understand the most important thing. That we are all brothers. Oh yeah... Have a great day. Hasta luega...Si?
