I had over 240° of backlash on the cross slide of my 1942 vintage - TopicsExpress

I had over 240° of backlash on the cross slide of my 1942 vintage South Bend 9 lathe. Given its age I assumed it was due to wear in the lead screw and nut so I lived with it. Recently I checked and found the screw and nut to be in reasonably good condition. The problem was the surfaces that drive the cross slide were not spaced far enough apart. Using a feeler gage between the bushing and the dial at max opening I got 0.035. So I made a 0.030 thick spacer, as can be seen in the photo between the dial and the crank handle. I now have about 80° of backlash or 0.025 on the dial. I think I can cut this down a little more with a slightly thicker washer.
