I had quick interviews with Mr. Garner a couple of times at the Crosby and later AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, back in the 1980s. He struck me as just a dialed-down version of many characters he played on television and in the movies -- smart, clever, cynical and a little cranky for effect when he wanted to be. He always hated when he wasnt playing well in the tournament, which is why I think he quit playing at Pebble when he got to a certain age. But he was always good interacting with the galleries and got the event. Youd also see him at Raider games once in a while, in LA and Oakland, but I would never bother him there. An acquaintance of mine when I lived in LA worked for Mr. Garner and sardonically referred to him as the most popular man in America but I think for while, that might even have been true. And the guy was treated well by Mr. Garner. All I can say is, I really enjoyed his work -- even some of his minor efforts like Support Your Local Sheriff, which I thought was really funny -- and I usually came away from his movies feeling entertained and more enlightened about the human condition because there was a lot going on beneath those wisecracks and winks. I hope his final years werent too miserable after his stroke in 2008. Rest in peace, sir. You made a lot of people happy.
