I had several questions last night about the Old Wives Tale about thunder and snow....here is something you might find interesting..... There are many variations of the Old Wives Tale regarding thunder during the winter-time. Some say thunder in the winter while some say thunder in January....Some say 7 days, some say 10 days and some say 30 days. Corey Davis at the State Climate Office for North Carolina has done research on the Old Wives Tale and says the 7 or 10 day version makes sense because it takes about 7 to 10 days for weather systems (storms) to move across the United States from west to east....so a strong cold front producing thunderstorms along the east coast would likely be followed by another system arriving on the east coast in 7 to 10 days. Davis has analyzed NC weather data back to the late 1940s. Turns out in NC that it snows 7 to 10 days after thunder about 13% of the time. That means the Old Wives Tale holds true about one out of seven times. Most of this information is in an article on the subject published in the Greensboro News & Record (newspaper)....skip
