I had taped, but not watched this years Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - TopicsExpress

I had taped, but not watched this years Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies until tonight.Nirvana got in this year and I found myself holding back tears. Its hard to explain their appeal. Its definitely generational. Its the music, but also the meteoric rise and horrid end that left everyone wondering what could have been. The 80s gave us so little. Music was terrible. One-hit hair bands with a few alternative bands that were OK. Watching them play Smells like Teen Spirit with Joan Jett on rhythm guitar and vocals was as starkly unique and fresh as the first time I heard the song. It gave me goosebumps. Im a fan of the Foo Fighters, but Grohl behind drums is amazing. Hes older, plays no differently than the naive kid he was 22 years ago. Grohl and Krist Novoselic were unlikely stars in Cobains circus. To have seen them play youd think they were out of their minds, yet Novoselic is SO understated and Grohl is the only high profile music or movie star Id give a limb to just eat a burger and have a beer with. It kills me how normal his life seems to be given his stardom. Hes not weird, precocious...any of it. Just seems like a guy from a small Midwest town who you might bowl with every Tuesday. And Pat Smear just shreds. His role is so unrecognized, but to watch him play those tunes again was pretty amazing. It was always loud and unpolished, but it took a more professional performance to realize how difficult those songs were. You can bet Grohl wanted everything dialed in for that night. If you can find it, watch it. Kim Gordon, Lorde, and Annie...lost the last name (wasnt familiar with her, but she was awesome)...each took a song and it was very cool.
