I had the opportunity this evening to be with a group of immigration activists watching Obamas speech on executive action. I met parents there who can now spend two precious years raising their children without fear of being deported, and I met young people whose parents will now be able to work legally in order to support them. But others had to explain to their parents that no, they didnt qualify under these rules; they will therefore continue to live in the shadows. Others had parents that qualify for relief, but uncles and sisters and cousins that do not. The event was, as one father put it, agridulce: bittersweet. Over the next few days, we will hear quite a lot of noise around Obamas decision. Please, friends, listen closely for the stories of these individuals. Listen for the stories of those who will benefit temporarily from tonights announcement; listen for the stories of those who remain without a voice. May our government welcome them officially into the American family to which they continue to contribute, and to which they rightfully belong.
