I had the pleasure of witnessing something both beautiful and tragic today. What I learned, or what was reinforced, is that the Tehachapi Vet Hospital and its staff thanklessly go to incredible lengths to ease our beloved animals to the other side. They cross the rainbow bridge will full bellies, knowing they are loved. Here is what I saw: (Ill leave their names out because theyd probably want it that way.) I was bringing Chad to the back to be parvo tested and passed by one of the girls lovingly stroking a massive mutt who was precariously resting himself on his front paws. I passed Chad off, washed my hands and went back to love on the big fella whose name was Rusty. Rusty was a morbidly obese lab mix that weighed in at 140lbs which is about 75lbs overweight--possibly the worst case Ive ever seen. Rustys weight had caused him to badly blow out a knee which had rendered him relatively immobile. He needed surgery to fix his knee but he was 70 pounds too heavy to be a candidate for surgery-- he was just too big. There were three techs working and loving on him now and one looked up and said this is last day with us meaning that he was being put to sleep, there was simply no other option. Knowing this was an inevitability, the girls had gone to McDonalds and gotten the big boy a quarter pounder for his last meal. I returned to the scene a while later, after he had enjoyed his last meal, and there were now five girls on the floor with him prepping him for his last moments on earth. They comforted him, loved him and tried to make the transition as easy and wonderful as possible. No cameras were there, no raises were being given for loving treatment, they simply loved him out of the goodness of their hearts and a feeling of duty to do so. It was tragic to lose a dog that simply shouldnt have been that big, but wonderful, beautiful and magical to observe such terrific humanity on display. If you get a chance to thank any of the gals at the vet, to so, better yet, give em a hug and let them know how precious and appreciated they are. They care for our loved ones, when were not there--sometimes not string enough to be there-- and that is one reason that I love each and every one of them!
