I hate that there was a time when colored people were thought of - TopicsExpress

I hate that there was a time when colored people were thought of as less than human and instead as property. I hate that because it means that since Im white most likely some of my ancestors must have been slave owners in some way. I hate that people didnt realize we are all the same and that the only difference between the races is the amount of melanin produced in our skin due to exposure to the sun and that my ancestors were not knowledgable enough to understand that. I hate that some people today still see skin color as a way to categorize people. Skin color is a physical trait as is a persons gender. It should not affect our chances of being liked, trusted, or the likelihood of getting a job, or the amount we are paid for our services. We should be judged strictly on our individual traits, traits that are not associated with physical characteristics. We should be judged by things only those who are blind can see. Get to know me. Trust me because Im trustworthy, give me a job because I do honest work, be my friend because we share similar interests and both are able to look past the shallow phrase of judging a book by its cover. We may look different but we are very much the same. Use time to tell who a person really is. Physical traits may be the most easily expressed genes, but Id be more concerned on personality. Think highly or lowly of me because of experience, not my appearance.
