I hate the NY Times. This whole editorial is about how competition is mean because there is always a loser and sometimes the loser gets hurt. about how even if youre a winner youre still a victim because youre just a pawn in societys game of....barf barf barf yada yada BS. Even the story he tells about a young defensive player, Sean, tackling a running back so hard the coaches think hes paralyzed ends with the kid being just fine and the moral being that Sean felt really badly. Football is merely a tiny version of every day life. We strategize, use our resources as wisely as possible, attack when necessary to survive, and stay on top as long as we can before some terrible injury (or illness) takes us out. Watching AND playing are just training for what you face at work, school, home...etc. But I guess we could all just sit on the couch and eat chips so we dont hurt anybody or face ethical conundrums or gain the feeling of being alive. I believe Kurt Vonnegut wrote a short story about this.
