I have ALWAYS Asserted that Music IS COLOR-BLIND. Music, like poetry, is a Universal Language that crosses All racial, Ethnic, economical, and religious backgrounds, yet, the stereo-typical thought process of many, remain the same..I said that to Say This; While in Atlanta, Ga. on Sunday during a brief stop-over on the way to my destination in another part of Georgia, I happened to be sitting by a young White male, a middle aged looking white male, and a white female. The younger White male began playing some Rap music on his iPod that was profanity laced. He looked over to me and another African American sitting close by and smiled, as if to say, Im playing your music now. The only eye contact he got from me and others, was due to the profanity laced lyrics that none of us wanted to hear. When he got no reaction from us, he switched over to music from Phil Collins and the group, Air Supply. To his Surprise, I began singing along with the lyrics from Collins and Air Supply. The look on his face was PRICELESS..LOL..He ASSUMED that because of our race, we would be into the GARBAGE they call Rap Music he had blasting, yet, was taken aback when I began singing all the lyrics to the songs by Collins, Air Supply, and other solo artists and groups that were Caucasian..I had to laugh when I saw the expression of shock on his face, because Apparently, some people think that All Blacks are into this Garbage on the radio now..Well, I am not, but I grew up loving songs from Phil Collins, Air Supply, Eurythmics, Culture Club, Stevie Nicks, Tears For Fears, Duran Duran, and many more Artists who are caucasian..He later began talking to me about the soft rock and British groups I grew up listening to, although his earlier Assumption was based off of the color of my skin..The lesson is, NEVER ASSUME, because when you Do, you Make an ASS(ume) of yourself..lol...IJS
