I have a confession to make -- I dont often feel at my strongest - TopicsExpress

I have a confession to make -- I dont often feel at my strongest in my world mythology course -- I mean, I know some stuff, and Im learning more as fast as I can, but I dont feel as deeply connected or fleet-footed in that material as I do in my philosophy and religious studies classes. And then one of my mythology students comes to my office and tells me that this class is the best class theyve ever had in all their many semesters of college, and that they absolutely LOVE it, (all told with a sparkle in their eye), and I think to myself, oh, o.k., I guess this class is better than I thought it was. And then I realize we do that with a lot of our work -- we focus on whats NOT working and on all the shortcomings and problems, while others often see us and our work in a much brighter light. Our own judgments and assessments are often askew, tainted by undue self-doubt and fear. A real professional, no matter their trade, learns to balance self-doubt with confidence -- too much of either and youre useless.
