I have a few opinions this morning. Two things: high cost of college tuition, and it being against the rules for NCAA players to earn money off sales of merchandise featuring their likeness. Heres an idea, make a % of the money each institution earns on sports sales (merchandising, tickets, promotional appearances, etc) count towards students collective tuition fees. Pay an additional % to the players in the form of a monthly stipend, with the stipulation that the remaining money will be deposited into a long-term CD or other form of investment that will vest at age 40. In addition, each player will be required to minor in business or accounting to better manage their life after sports. Furthermore, to prevent colleges from simply hiking tuition costs to cover the alleged loss, have Congress pass a bill that mandates colleges and universities cannot raise tuition costs for 20 years. The endowments pledged to most universities dwarf the budgets of most third world counties anyway. I personally attended a private college of less than 600 students and know for a fact the school had 500 million dollars in pledges and endowments from families, donations and alumni. Imagine how much money Stanford or Alabama has? When a school says they cant afford to pay athletes or that its a slippery slope, dont believe them.
