I have a few thoughts on this. First off, its a funny coincidence, but just the other day my wife and I were talking about that botched execution in Oklahoma, and I said to her that they should just bring back the firing squad. Now, I personally am opposed to the death penalty, on principle. But if a society is gonna have it, why not go with something more foolproof? Ah, but this article in the HuffPo quotes someone as saying that a firing squad isnt *necessarily* foolproof, after all. The prisoner might move slightly, so it might not go off perfectly. Well, look, how bout this, then? How bout you strap the prisoner to a post (just like they strapped people into the electric chair or strap them onto a gurney for lethal injection) and you have a guy with a double barrel shotgun who brings the barrel straight up to the doomed mans face and fires at point blank range. You know, so that his head is, like, gone. Instantly. Thatd work. Oh, itd be too traumatic for the guy who pulls the trigger, you say? Alright, then, Ive got a solution for that. Let the judge do it. Thats right, the trial judge, who presided over the case and handed down the sentence. Presumably the judge has no problem with capital punishment, since he signed off on it right? So, we give the judge a shotgun, and let him do it. Thatd be the requirement: you handed down the sentence, you go take the guy out. Any bits of blood, bone or gray matter that might happen to wind up on the judges robes will be cleaned off at state expense, though, judge, so no worries on that count. Happy shooting!
