I have a homework assignment in my Electronic Health Records class. My instructor wants to know...or wants me to explain... how HIPAA protects covered entities. I know what a covered entity is. It is a healthcare provider who uses electronic medical or health records for instance. Health Plans and Health Care clearinghouses. All I can find on covered entities are rules/regulations etc. I found benefits to being covered by HIPAA like for instance saving paper because they may not use paper records or time saving and being more efficient because they (again) use electronic records as opposed to paper records. I think I might just do my assignment wrong and turn in what I can find and what I know. I wrote her an email explaining that I cannot find how HIPAA benefits them and she has not replied....
