I have a young stallion who will be 4 at the end of July. He successfully covered his first mare last year and I would like him to breed one more mare before turning solely to his career under saddle for a while. However, the mare I want him to breed seems to hold little to none of his interest. I have tried teasing her every day of her heat cycle multiple times but he never expresses interest in actually mounting. The first couple times he would try but she would squeal and strike out ahead of her. This frightened him and I think put him off of considering breeding her. Possibly for good. Ive tried everything under the sun to breed the pair. They are turned out together 24/7. Same behavior in the pasture as when I take them out to try other things. Tied her and lead him over. Tied him and lead her over for courting. Made sure they were close to his favorite mare once. Let him see a new mare once nearby. Nothing. He will visit with her for a minute then try to graze and is done with her. I have also removed the mare from the pasture for a little bit before and then put her back in. Nothing. Any ideas or suggestions? I likely will just forget about it altogether pretty soon and consider it an opportunity lost. Mare is 20 years old. Not wanting to train him to phantom at this time and probably will just be starting him under saddle soon and forgetting this episode. :(
