I have alot of rest for diversity in culture and I love to see how our brethren in other countries do it. I have particularly seen on tv how our West African friends celebrate or conduct their wedding ceremonies. They are rich in their ways and have marketed that to a point where we are able to tell whenever we see it on tv that its from West Africa. Bravo to you our sisters and brothers. However it concerns me that instead of us Zambians emulating what our friends do we want to copy. Do we know the meaning of some of those traditions or dressing? I have noted that in Zambia, we have copied certain dressing and gestures and wonder whether we are actually not offending our brethren by not doing it right. Its happening at kitchen parties now where a woman is given a cup of water and asked to look for the groom to be among the crowd and serve him the water. In todayz sunday mail, this is shown. Further more, the groom to be is dressed like west african and is carrying nkonto. Ok correct me if iam wrong, shouldnt we stick to what we know best, our own traditions? Please lets promote our own culture like what our friends have done for the sale of our offspring and also to avoid to offend by doing things we may not know much about and especially the meaning of those gestures. I rest my case.
