I have become one of those people. Before I took running serious I would drive around Mass ave, Jamaica Pond, DW Field park, Northeastern university, and 138 and see people running. It would be early morning, blazing hot afternoons, or cold and wet wintery nights as I drove by and spotted people running. I watched, wondered and admired their drive because running is tough. It takes a certain level of dedication, drive, and endurance to make it a regular part of ones lifestyle. As I people watched I saw a lot of out of shape people walking, but Ive never seen such a person briskly running. I drove slow or rode my bike by them (runners), after making eye contact Id send them a nod of the head and extend my arm in a wave of respect. Now I am that person people drive pass and stare at, that person whom their imagination creates eccentric worlds in which runners live mysterious lives. I am that crazy Black guy running before the sun comes up, that guy running in the street because snow has taken over the sidewalks, that fixture at the local run spots acting like a Drill Sgt whipping his daughter into run shape. Im the guy getting the head nod and the respectful waves. I am him because I run!
