I have been accused of being an alarmist concerning the flood dangers associated with building a hazardous waste facility anywhere near a marine habitat e.g. the Fraser River. Part of my concern was based on the existence of an engineering report provided to the B.C. Ministry of the Environment eight years ago which emphasized the dangers associated with flooding in Chilliwack. Today, I am advised that: The City of Chilliwack has confirmed the now famous engineering report that supposedly, nobody asked for or read, does not exist. The brother of Sharon Gaetz even attacked former MLA Gwen OMahony on Facebook chiding have you read the engineering report? but David Blaine has confirmed to the Coalition the City does NOT have an engineering report. The shemozzle was started by Sharons quote in the Times Not one person has asked for reports from our engineer, and that makes me a little sad, which left the false impression there is an engineer at the City, who wrote a report, and that nobody asked for it, and therefore it was not read. Top Official Blaines confirmation that an engineering report was never written or even requested by Council, raises the question, did Sharon Gaetz deliberately mislead voters during the civic election for her own advantage? Today, council will vote on the location of the hazardous waste plant. Sam Waddington, you are just one vote, which way will you go? My concern lies in a reference to an engineering report referred to the brother of the Mayor that, according to David Blaine, the Director of Planning and Engineering at City Hall, never existed. So, on the one hand, you have the brother of the Mayor chastizing people for not having a read a non-existent report, and on the other hand, you have the Mayor bemoaning the fact that no report exists. So, if no report exists, shouldnt one be generated to deal with the potential environmental nightmare that awaits Chilliwack when flooding isolates the Hazardous Waste Facility with water that prevents material evacuation of adequate back-up power source to deal with the need to maintain power for heating and cooling purposes? These are all questions which should be asked at todays Council meeting.
