I have been amazed at some of the comments I have heard about the game of football during this World Cup. What is even more amazing is that some compare it to rugby and even manage to convince themselves, somehow, that rugby is superior. They say the game is boring when it moves fluidly contact to contact for minutes compared to rugby which goes from set piece to set piece, stop, start, stop, start. They compare fitness endurance when a rugby player covers up to 7km in a game and football players in last nights final covered well over double that (twice, 2x) They talk about soccer injuries, forgetting what it feels like to be kicked on the shin themselves, forgetting that they are always being attacked on the skin. Not belly to belly like rugby. They talk about soccer players lying on the ground forgetting that rugby players are lying on the ground maybe a 100 times more. You could compare skill levels but luckily few have, knowing that you could be Rugby World Cup star after only playing a few years (Jona Lomu) footballers need to start almost as soon as they can walk. It is really not even possible to compare the tactics, vision and approach on a soccer ground. The ebb and flow, the defence systems the creativity and infinite variation in attack compared to the static predictability of rugby. I even heard some people calling the final boring, they must have spent the evening with a duvet over their heads not to see the probing attacks, the contrasting systems and styles and the titanic battle that was that game. Surely every human being could see the sublime quality of the winning goal. The approach the movement of the ball the catching of the ball on the chest the control to his feet and the half volley to the far post in crossing in front of the keeper. Rugby? I played rugby. I would rather paper cut myself to death than go out of my way to watch a rugby game.
