I have been banging on for a while now about the disease called mediocrity and before I suggest a treatment, I think I need to make a few things clear. Yesterday’s World Cup final and Germany’s subsequent win has generated a flurry of comments regarding our national team the Black Stars. Many have suggested that because we were the only team to manage a draw against the eventual winners, we should be proud of our shambolic achievements in Brazil on and off the field. Indeed mediocrity has no shame; a look at the German national team reveals some interesting facts. • The Germans were eliminated in the quarter final by Croatia in 1998, there was a route and branch enquiry into what by German standards was a catastrophic failure. • In 2002 Germany got to the semi-final and has done so in all competitions since then, a record four semi-finals in a roll. • In 2014 Germany have won the World Cup. Talk of consistency and aspiration and contrast it with the lame arguments and clutching to straws so want us to do in Ghana; when oh when are we going to realise that to punch above our weight and be competitive in all spheres of life we cannot accept to be second best? When oh when will this sycophancy stop and let us accept when we are just not good enough? We cannot continue to accept low standards and excuses there off and expect to achieve anything, the Germans had to accept below par was not fit for their image to plan for success and success has come and rightly so. The mediocrities and their acolytes thereof should give some of us a break, truth be told the Black Stars failed miserably in Brazil and so did all officialdom associated. Their mediocrity caught up with them.
